French Past Subjunctive (Subjonctif Passé): Concordance & Rules
Most French learners memorize the present subjunctive (qu'il vienne, que tu fasses) and assume that covers all hypothetical situations. But what happens when the action in the subjunctive clause occurred before the feeling, doubt, or judgment in the main clause? Enter the Subjonctif Passé.
⚡ The Subjonctif Passé Formula
Examples:
• "Je suis content que tu aies réussi ton examen." (I am happy that you passed your exam.)
• "Il est dommage qu'elle soit partie si tôt." (It is a pity that she left so early.)
1. Temporal Concordance: Anteriority (Anteriorité)
The choice between the present and past subjunctive depends solely on the chronological relationship between the two clauses:
Simultaneous / Future (Présent)
Action happens at the same time or after the main verb:
(I doubt that he will come tomorrow → Subjonctif Présent)
Anterior / Completed (Passé)
Action happened before the main verb:
(I doubt that he came yesterday → Subjonctif Passé)
2. The Auxiliary Verbs in Subjunctive
Just like in the passé composé, 90% of verbs use avoir, while verbs of movement (Dr. & Mrs. Vandertramp) and all reflexive verbs take être:
| Pronoun | Avoir (Subjunctive) | Être (Subjunctive) |
|---|---|---|
| que j' / je | aie | sois |
| que tu | aies | sois |
| qu'il / elle / on | ait | soit |
| que nous | ayons | soyons |
| que vous | ayez | soyez |
| qu'ils / elles | aient | soient |
3. The Participle Agreement Traps
Just as with the passé composé, the strict Académie Française agreement rules apply:
- With Être: The past participle matches the grammatical subject in gender and number:
"Je regrette qu'elle soit partie." (feminine singular: +e)
"Je suis surpris qu'ils soient arrivés en retard." (masculine plural: +s) - With Avoir: Invariable, UNLESS a preceding direct object (COD) comes before the verb:
"Les lettres que tu aies écrites." (letters is feminine plural COD preceding the verb → +es).
