Spanish Passive "Se" vs Impersonal "Se": The Definitive Rule
In conversational Spanish, the true passive voice (ser + participio) is rarely heard. Instead, native speakers overwhelmingly use "se" to depersonalize actions or describe things happening passively. But should the verb be singular or plural? Why do we say "Se venden pisos" (plural) but "Se busca a los sospechosos" (singular)?
Verb Agrees With the Thing
The object is grammatically the patient subject. If the noun is plural, the verb MUST be plural!
Se venden casas. (Plural!)
Verb Is STRICTLY Singular
There is NO grammatical subject (meaning "one / people / they"). Used with intransitive verbs or people preceded by personal "a".
Se busca a los sospechosos. (Never plural!)
1. Pasiva Refleja: The Agreement Rule
Pasiva refleja is formed with: SE + Transitive Verb (3rd Person Singular or Plural) + Inanimate Noun.
| Noun Number | Spanish Sentence | English Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Singular Noun | Se habla español aquí. | Spanish is spoken here. |
| Plural Noun | Se hablan tres idiomas. | Three languages are spoken. |
| Plural Noun | Se cometieron varios errores. | Several mistakes were made. |
| Singular Noun | Se inauguró el nuevo puente. | The new bridge was inaugurated. |
2. Se Impersonal: The Personal "A" Decider
How do you know when to switch from Pasiva Refleja to Se Impersonal? The answer is human beings + the preposition "A" (Personal A):
The Human Object Rule:
Because direct human objects require personal "a" in Spanish, they can never be the grammatical subject of a passive clause. Therefore, with humans introduced by "a", the sentence becomes strictly impersonal and the verb must stay singular:
Se busca a los culpables. ← CORRECT! (Impersonal Se + singular verb)
3. The 3 Systems Compared Side-by-Side
| Structure | Register | Example | Tone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ser + Participio | Formal / Journalism | El libro fue escrito por Cervantes. | Stiff, literary, historical |
| Pasiva Refleja | Universal (Signs, daily) | Se venden casas de verano. | Natural, native, default |
| Se Impersonal | Universal (Generalizing) | Aquí se come de maravilla. | Colloquial, conversational |
