Gerund vs. Infinitive: The English "-ing" Trap

In English, the suffix -ing does double duty: it forms progressive tenses ("I am eating") and acts as a noun subject ("Smoking is forbidden"). In Spanish, French, and Italian, gerunds can NEVER be nouns. Saying "Fumando es malo" sounds completely ungrammatical to native ears.

Sentence Subject / Activity as Noun

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง English sentence: "Smoking is bad for your health."
โŒ The English Trap

โœ… Correct Spanish
Fumar es malo para la salud. โœ… (Always use Infinitive!)
๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท French: Fumer est mauvais pour la santรฉ.
๐Ÿ’ก Grammar Secret: In Romance languages, only the Infinitive can serve as the grammatical subject of a sentence.

ร‰l caminรณ mientras escuchar... โŒ
โœ… Correct Spanish

๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท French: Il marchait en รฉcoutant de la musique. โœ…
๐Ÿ’ก Grammar Secret: Use the Gerund (-ando/-iendo or en + -ant) ONLY for actions progressing concurrently with another event.

โŒ The English Trap
Aprendes por practicar... / por practicando... โŒ
โœ… Correct Spanish
Se aprende practicando todos los dรญas. โœ… (Bare gerund!)
๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท French: On apprend en pratiquant tous les jours. (Gรฉrondif avec 'en')
๐Ÿ’ก Grammar Secret: Spanish expresses 'by doing' with a standalone gerund without any preposition ('practicando'); French uses 'en + participe'.
