French Verbs of Opinion: Subjunctive vs Indicative

In French, verbs of thinking and belief (such as penser, croire, and trouver) present a fascinating grammatical chameleon: in affirmative sentences, they express reality and take the indicative. However, the moment they are negated or inverted in a formal question, certainty shatters into doubt, triggering the subjunctive!

⚡ The Polarity Rule of Penser & Croire

✓ Affirmative → INDICATIVE

"Je pense qu'il est malade."
(Certainty/belief → indicative est)

⚠️ Negative → SUBJUNCTIVE

"Je ne pense pas qu'il soit malade."
(Doubt/uncertainty → subjunctive soit)

❓ Inversion → SUBJUNCTIVE

"Penses-tu qu'il soit malade ?"
(Questioning truth → subjunctive soit)

1. Key Verbs Affected by the Polarity Shift

This rule applies to all verbs expressing personal belief, perception, probability, and declaration:

Verb Affirmative (+ Indicatif) Negative (+ Subjonctif)
penser que Je pense qu'elle comprend. Je ne pense pas qu'elle comprenne.
croire que Je crois qu'il fera beau. Je ne crois pas qu'il fasse beau.
trouver que Je trouve que ce film est long. Je ne trouve pas que ce film soit long.
être sûr / certain que Je suis sûr qu'ils viennent. Je ne suis pas sûr qu'ils viennent (subj).
espérer que ⚠️ J'espère qu'il viendra (Futur). Espérer takes Indicative in affirmative!

2. The Flip Trap: Douter vs Ne Pas Douter

🚨 Reverse Logic Alert:

Because douter inherently denotes doubt, the affirmative form takes the subjunctive:
• "Je doute qu'il vienne." (I doubt he is coming → Subjunctive)
When negated, ne pas douter signifies total conviction, so it often takes the indicative in modern French:
• "Je ne doute pas qu'il réussira." (I have no doubt he will succeed → Indicative Futur)
